The Importance of Accessible Washrooms and Access Control Pros (ACP)

The AODA aims for a barrier-free Ontario by 2025, with accessible washrooms being essential for dignity and independence for people with disabilities.

Key Updates (Effective January 1, 2015):

  • Barrier-Free Travel: Power-operated doors, wider doorways, and ramps.
  • Elevator Access: Required for multi-floor buildings (with some exceptions).
  • Visual Fire Safety: Visual fire alarms in accessible washrooms.
  • Washroom Enhancements: Public door operators, strategic grab bar placements, fold-down bars, and larger clear floor space.

Access Control Pros (ACP) helps ensure these standards are met, promoting compliance and inclusivity in all facilities.

Key Features of an Accessible Washroom

Creating an Inclusive Environment Beyond Building Codes with Access Control Pros (ACP)

Building codes provide the foundation for accessibility, but true inclusivity goes beyond regulations. To create a welcoming space, consider:

  • Supportive Staff: A friendly, proactive team that offers assistance can make a big difference for individuals with disabilities.
  • Flexible Seating: Removable chairs improve maneuverability and comfort compared to fixed seating.

Access Control Pros (ACP) ensures your physical space meets accessibility standards while helping create a fully welcoming, functional, and compliant environment.

Key Features of an Accessible Washroom with Access Control Pros (ACP)

Creating an accessible washroom goes beyond basic building codes. To ensure an inclusive and functional space, consider these essential features:

  • Individual or Unisex Washrooms: Provide privacy and ease of use for all individuals.
  • Outward Swinging Doors: These doors simplify entry and exit, unlike inward-swinging doors that need extra space.
  • Clear Floor Space: At least 72 inches x 72 inches (1.8 meters x 1.8 meters) of space allows wheelchair maneuverability.
  • Wide Doorways: A minimum width of 35 inches (89 cm) ensures wheelchair accessibility.
  • Automatic Features: Automatic door openers, flush valves, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers make the space more user-friendly. Controls should be no higher than 47 inches (119 cm) above the ground.
  • Lowered Shelves & Hooks: Position these at a maximum height of 47 inches (119 cm) for easier access.
  • Grab Bars: Install L-shaped grab bars beside the toilet and a horizontal grab bar on the back wall for support during transfers.
